FREE PRESS & DEMOCRACY AWARD

Honorable Oktay Eksi, Member of Parliament: May 19, 2012

The first “Atatürk Free Press and Democracy Award” was given to Honorable Oktay Eksi, Member of Parliament (CHP) and legendary journalist. The award ceremony was held during the May 19th Youth Day celebration at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC.

SECULARISM & CIVILIZATION AWARD

Ms. Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, Historian, Archeologist: May 19, 2012

The first “Atatürk Secularism and Civilization Award” was presented to Ms. Muazzez Cig a prominent historian,archeologist and a fearless advocate of secularism.  She has published many scholarly papers and books on Anatolian civilizations such as the Hitites and the Sumerians.  One of her noteworthy accomplishments is deciphering ancient cuneiform tablets at the İstanbul Archeology Museum upon which the museum became a Middle Eastern languages learning center attended by researchers worldwide.

HISTORY & CULTURE AWARD

Mr. Turgut Özakman, Writer, Historian, Lawyer: May 19, 2012

Mr.  Özakman is best known as the author of the historical fiction novel Şu Çılgın Türkler, (“Those Crazy Turks”). Describing the Turkish national struggle for survival under the leadership of Atatürk during the War of Independence, it is known as the single best selling work in Turkish history.  Mr. Özakman authored numerous other best-selling books, also recounting heroic stories of Turkish civilians and soldiers during the War of Independence.

ATATURK & DEMOCRACY AWARD

Senator Robert C. Byrd: May 19, 1995

The first “Atatürk Peace and Democracy Award” was given to Honorable Robert C. Byrd, Senator from West Virginia (D) a great American and a great friend of Turkey. The first event, which also marked ASA’s inauquration, was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC on May 19, 1995.

Richard Holbrooke :May 19,1996

The 1996 “Atatürk Peace and Democracy Award” was given Mr. Richard C. Holbrook, former Undersecretary of State for European Affairs. Event was held at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC on May 19, 1996.

Adm. William J. Crowe Jr.: May 15, 1998

Admiral Crowe, Jr. received the “Atatürk Peace and Democracy Award” for his much publicized appreciation and admiration of Atatürk. Event was held at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC on May 15, 1998.

The Turkish General Staff: Nov. 25, 1997

The idea of bestowing the 1997 “Atatürk Secularism & Democracy Award” to the Turkish General Staff for preserving secularism and democracy in Turkey. General Cevik Bir received the award on Nov. 25, 1997 in the former Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington DC

Orhan Tarhan : May 25, 2001

The Atatürk Society of America presented “Atatürk Secularism and Democracy Award” to Orhan Tarhan co-founder, a past President of the ASA was presented by Prof. Amos Perlmutter on the occasion of celebrating May 19 at a ceremony at the Turkish Embassy on May 25, 2001.

SCIENCE IS GUIDANCE AWARD

Prof. Behram Kursunoglu: May 25, 2001

The Atatürk Society of America presented “Atatürk Science is Guidance Award” to Prof. Behram Kursunoglu. Award was presented by Amb. Baki Ilkin on the occasion of celebrating May 19 at a ceremony at the Turkish Embassy on May 25, 2001.

UNIVERSALITY OF CIVILIZATION & PEACE AWARD

Prof. Bernard Lewis: May 25, 2002

Atatürk Society of America presented “Universality of Civilization & Peace Award” to Prof. Bernard Lewis at the Turkish Embassy on May 25, 2002. The ASA Executive Board decided to present the award to Prof. Lewis on grounds that he contributed extensively to history scholarship with his accurate analysis of Turkey’s and in particular of Atatürk’s positive impact on Middle Eastern history.

Dr. Andrew Mango: Oct.26, 2003

Atatürk Society of America presented of the Atatürk Award to Dr. Andrew Mango, author of Atatürk: The Biography of the Founder of Modern Turkey. The award was titled “Universality of Civilization”, one of Atatürk’s political principles. The ASA Executive Board’s choice of presenting the Award to Dr. Mango was based on the fact that he made an indelible contribution to the understanding and propagation of Atatürk’s thoughts and achievements by this biography. Dr. Mango received his award from Prof. Bruce Kuniholm at the Turkish Embassy on Oct.26, 2003.

EDUCATION & MODERNIZATION AWARD

Prof. Turkan Saylan : May 25, 2001

The Atatürk Society of America presented “Atatürk Education & Modernization Award” to Prof. Turkan Saylan. Award was presented by former Amb. to Turkey Amb. Richard Barkley on the occasion of celebrating May 19 at a ceremony at the Turkish Embassy on May 25, 2001. Prof. Saylan was the founder and the President of the Cagdas Yasami Destekleme Dernegi (CYDD, Foundation to Support contemporary Life).

LEADERSHIP AWARD

Senator Chuck Hagel : May 19, 2005

The Atatürk Society of America presented ASA Leadership Award to Sen. Chuck Hagel a memento thanking him for his contribution to the improvement of relations between the Turkey and US. He received the award from Amb. Faruk Logoglu. The event took place in the famous and historic Caucus Room of the Russell Office Building on May 19, 2005.

Speaker Newt Gingrich: May 19, 2006

The Atatürk Society of America presented ASA Leadership Award to Speaker Newt Gingrich for commemoration of his contributions to publicizing Atatürk’s Legacy. The event was held in the historic and majestic House Caucus Room on May 16, 2006.

REPUBLICANISM AWARD

Prof. Dr. Suna Kili April 23, 2010

On the 23rd of April, 2010, the Executive Board of Atatürk Society of America has unanimously moved to bestow Republicanism Award on Prof. Dr. Suna Kili’s main areas of specialization are political theory, models of development and modernization. She received the award in Istanbul.
