International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development

The International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/40/212 on 17 December 1985. All over the world, volunteers risk their lives every day to care for people affected by conflict, violence and humanitarian crises. Volunteers brave many dangers to help others, driven by the desire to make a difference in the face of human suffering.

“Mankind is a single body and each nation a part of that body. We must never say, “What does it matter to me if some part of the world is ailing?” If there is such an illness, we must concern ourselves with it as though we were having that illness.”
